Gotcha!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kelly @ 6:59 pm

John McCain is complaining about “Gotcha journalism” to defend his running mates latest comments regarding a voter’s query about whether she would invade Pakistan. It was an embarrassment to McCain because her comments mirrored Obama’s, comments which he’d been attacking Obama for months over. Now the conservative pundits are extending this to include the interviews conducted by Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson. It’s par for the course with the Republicans to merely try and find a buzz word that magically makes reality disappear. But let’s stop and take a look at the hard facts here. Was it a case of the media trying to “get” Palin or was it a case of the media being honestly shocked at the lack of answers?

Let’s look at some of the “trivia” that was bounced off her. Palin said that living in Alaska gave her foreign policy experience. Certainly if it had then that’s not a “gotcha” question. What are your thoughts on the Bush Doctrine? Is it too much to ask of a person who aspires to be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office in a time of war the basis for our being in that war? While she’s defending her running mates long “defense of regulation” Couric asks her to name more than one piece of legislation which backs the claim. When asked whether she could name a Supreme Court decision other than Roe vs. Wade, Palin drew a blank. Couric asks what newspaper Palin reads, and Palin answers all of them. All of them? Really? One would expect that if one read “all” of the newspapers then one would be able to elucidate upon the Bush Doctrine, or perhaps even name a SC decision other than Roe vs. Wade, like say…Bush vs. Gore? I don’t think that any of these questions can be really considered “hard hitting” and in all honesy, If they were asked of Obama they’d be considered softballs. What’s stunning isn’t Palin’s inability to answer difficult questions, it’s her inability to ask the simplest of them.

Now you might say, as my friend whom I had lunch with today, I couldn’t say what the Bush Doctrine is off the cuff (although he then did). I’d say to you, as I did to him, you aren’t running for President. If this were gotcha journalism, getting got is no excuse. I don’t concede for a moment that Gibson or Couric were trying to catch her with a question she didn’t have the answer to, but if they were it doesn’t matter. We’re talking about a person who deems to be a 72 year-old-cancer-surviving-heartbeat from the Presidency. If they don’t know more than one SC decision then for crying out loud, they don’t deserve to be naming SC judges!! If they can’t tell why we are at war then they have no business running the military!!! If they don’t have enough curiosity about the world to read the newspaper or get a passport then they have no business representing the US in it!!! Even if this is a case of “gotcha” journalism, Palin has been got and that is a serious and profound problem.

There are examples of “dumb” things that Biden says. They point to his comments about “getting shot at” when he wasn’t near being shot at. They point to his comments about clean coal. People ask why doesn’t he get the same treatment? The reason is that the dumb things are just dumb things Biden says, they are things that Biden says that proves he’s dumb. Biden still has substance, particular in the area he was picked to shore up, that of foreign policy. With Biden, yes there’s the occasional blooper, but that is accompanied with quite a bit of profound discourse. With Palin there’s only empty rhetoric accompanied with the comments. Simply put, Biden is an intelligent person who says dumb things and Palin is an ignorant person who says ignorant things. It’s not just what Palin says that is getting her in trouble it’s what she knows or more accurately doesn’t know that has people worried.

I wish the conservatives would grasp this. We aren’t talking about a temp job making copies here. We’re talking about the President of the United States of America, the single most challenging job in the world. Are we to believe that a person who can’t read a newspaper can run the nation? (Before you say Bush, keep in mind the last eight years.) There’s no time for OJT. We need someone who can step in and take over the job. It’s not the kind of thing that you can pick up in a week or two of debate preparation. It’s not something that you can learn even in a year or two. It’s something that requires an intellect and capacity that Palin simply doesn’t have. Some say that Palin is intelligent, she’s not. The proof is in the “gotcha” intended or not.

  1. I think Bush with a bush has tons of more dirt to dig, and the media is taking it way too easy on her…which sucks.
